KAWS x BAPE - Early 2000’s

KAWS’ collaboration with A Bathing Ape (BAPE) brought together his signature Companion and Chum characters, along with the iconic “XX” motif, and integrated them into BAPE’s distinct Ape Camo, Baby Milo graphics, and BAPESTA sneakers. The partnership spanned apparel, footwear, and accessories, becoming one of the earliest examples of KAWS’ work crossing into Japanese streetwear.

2005 BAPESTA Sneakers

The collaboration debuted on BAPESTA sneakers featuring KAWS’ “XX” branding on the eyes of BAPE’s ape head logo. Colorways ranged from classic black and white to bold camo overlays, each limited in release. These sneakers became instantly sought-after by collectors in both streetwear and contemporary art communities.

Apparel & Accessories

T-shirts, hoodies, and jackets incorporated KAWS’ Companion and Chum characters alongside BAPE’s signature graphics. The pieces often juxtaposed playful, cartoon-inspired imagery with the premium construction of BAPE garments, creating a dynamic fusion of New York street art and Japanese streetwear aesthetics. Limited edition accessories, including backpacks and hats, followed the same design approach.

Cultural Impact

This collaboration is significant for bridging the worlds of street art and streetwear, positioning KAWS as a key figure in global hype culture. For BAPE, it reinforced the brand’s reputation for high-profile collaborations that mix art, fashion, and collectible culture. The limited nature of the release fueled hype, establishing KAWS × BAPE as a foundational moment in both KAWS’ career and the history of collectible streetwear.
