KAWS has officially joined one of the longest-running art programs in the drinks world. Absolut just revealed the ABSOLUT KAWS Artist Edition, a limited bottle that puts his XX motif and CHUM front and center. This is KAWS' fourth liquor collaboration, and it might be the one with the deepest art world roots. Pre-orders opened October 1 on Absolut's website, with a limited rollout to select US retailers to follow.

The history here is a big part of the appeal. Absolut's art program kicked off in 1985 when Andy Warhol painted the brand's first art ad, and he then recommended Keith Haring for the next one. Between 1985 and 2004, more than 550 artists made over 850 works around the bottle, and the whole collection now lives at Spritmuseum in Stockholm. Most of that work ran as ads, though. KAWS' design goes on the bottle itself, which is part of why the Artist Editions feel like collectibles and not just a nice label.

What makes this one a little more full circle is that KAWS has history with the brand. Back in the 90s, he reportedly painted over an Absolut Warhol poster as part of his early bus shelter interventions. Now he's getting the official treatment. The front of the bottle carries CHUM holding a textured square with the XX motif, while the back reproduces an original painting Absolut commissioned from him, which is where the whole design started. The bottle shape itself stays untouched, and it follows last year's Keith Haring edition, so the lineage is pretty on the nose.

KAWS said, "My goal is to allow art to meet people in unexpected places," and a vodka bottle on a shelf or bar cart is about as unexpected as it gets. Between the Warhol connection, the Haring pipeline, and a fourth liquor collab on his résumé, this one will probably move fast. Keep an eye on Absolut's site and your local retailers if you want one for the collection.
