KAWS x Mad Hectic x Miffy - 2001

In the early 2000s, KAWS created both a Miffy Doll plush and Miffy Package Painting, reimagining the classic Dutch bunny through his own visual language—‘XX’ eyes and graphic charm. These pieces showcase his early exploration of soft forms and playful reinvention of beloved icons.

Miffy Doll (2001)
A petite polyester plush measuring approximately 7.5 × 7.5 × 5 inches, featuring Miffy with KAWS’ crossed-out eyes and plush body—a rare example of the artist integrating a famed children’s character into his sculptural vocabulary. (3, 4)

Miffy Package Painting (2002)
An acrylic-on-canvas painting (16 × 16 in) that layers KAWS’ Companion-style touches onto the Miffy form in a more painterly, gallery-ready format—merging commercial nostalgia with fine art context. (2)

Why It Matters
This collaboration illuminates how KAWS early on blurred the lines between pop culture and art-world iconography, setting the tone for later toy-based releases. Reframing a childhood figure like Miffy allowed him to explore innocence through a lens of contemporary introspection—ending up as something both familiar and uncanny.
