With Family, KAWS introduced something rarely seen in his vinyl work—inter-character storytelling. Released on February 14, 2022, the multi-figure sculpture features two Companions, a BFF, and a Chum, arranged to suggest a tender, protective group. Each figure maintains its signature form, but their physical closeness and body language—one Companion gently guiding a smaller one, BFF and Chum standing as watchful sentinels—turn them into a chosen family. The pose doesn’t feel staged; it feels lived-in, like a quiet moment frozen in vinyl.

Rather than offering the figures individually, the set was sold as a single unit in colorways like grey/pink, brown/blue, black, and white. The combined form measures over a foot in width, and each box included all four characters, pre-positioned. Though this was an open edition, access was limited to a single KAWSONE release and inventory moved quickly. The retail price was $680. Unlike past releases that focused on solitude or introspection, Family gestures toward care, connection, and the idea that even among KAWS’s surreal cast of characters, everyone needs someone to lean on.
