As the fifth destination in the global KAWS:Holiday project, Holiday: Space took a more conceptual turn, shifting from large-scale public installations to a stratospheric art experiment. In collaboration with AllRightsReserved, KAWS launched a Companion figure into near space using a weather balloon, documenting its journey beyond Earth’s atmosphere. To commemorate the event, he released a vinyl sculpture depicting Companion in full astronaut gear, crouched slightly and holding its face in a gesture that reads as awe, fatigue, or introspection. The figure stands 11.5 inches tall and is detailed with textured tubes, padded suit elements, and a sealed helmet—offering a blend of realism and melancholy.

The idea behind the space installation connects directly to KAWS’s previous reinterpretation of the MTV Moonman trophy, which he redesigned in 2013. That sculpture replaced the traditional astronaut’s head with a Companion skull and featured X-ed out eyes, foreshadowing the direction Holiday: Space would take years later. Where the Moonman trophy was a limited-edition award piece, Holiday: Space expanded the motif into a broader narrative. Companion in space becomes a symbol of creative ambition, alienation, and the boundless reach of public art, even beyond the atmosphere.

The sculpture was released through DDT Store on August 17, 2020, offered in three colorways: matte silver, metallic gold, and flat black.
