Separated - 2021

In early 2021, Companion appears seated with its face buried in its hands in the emotionally resonant Separated vinyl figure, released in grey, brown, and black open editions as part of the What Party exhibition

Retail Price: $280
Edition Size: Open

Separated captures one of the most vulnerable poses ever seen in KAWS’s Companion line: seated on the floor, legs outstretched, arms resting on its knees, and face buried in its hands. Released on February 26, 2021, the figure dropped alongside the Brooklyn Museum’s What Party exhibition, echoing the emotional depth that anchored that show. This wasn’t just a gesture of sadness, it was a sculpted pause, a moment of emotional stillness that felt eerily timely in a year still marked by isolation and collective exhaustion.

The 7.75-inch vinyl sculpture came in three open edition colorways: grey, brown, and black; and was distributed through both KAWSONE and the Brooklyn Museum’s own shop. Though not numbered, each piece included a certificate of authenticity embedded with an NFC chip, a detail that reflected the growing collector demand for both legitimacy and innovation. Retailing at $280, Separated didn’t need elaborate posture or spectacle to leave its mark. It spoke softly; and that was enough.
