KAWS x General Mills- 2022
KAWS first collaborated with General Mills in late 2021 for the Reese’s Puffs “KAWSPUFFS” campaign, followed by his 2022 redesign of Monster Cereals featuring collectible figurines. These releases not only reinvigorated nostalgic breakfast icons but also transcended their supermarket beginnings through an AR game and serious collector appeal, ultimately landing them in a major KAWS + Warhol museum exhibition.
Reese’s Puffs – KAWSPUFFS (2021)
KAWS released two versions of Reese’s Puffs boxes: a standard orange box ($3.99) found nationwide and a limited blue box ($49.99) sold online. Both included a QR code to the KAWSPUFFS AR game—top scorers could win signed blue boxes, blending cereal with interactive collectible culture. (1, 3)
Monster Cereals & Collectible Toys (2022)
In August 2022, KAWS reimagined Franken Berry, Count Chocula, Boo-Berry, and Frute Brute packaging in his “X-eyed” style. Each box contained a sweepstakes code for collectible cereal-prize toys featuring the same characters. In 2024, a deluxe 3D vinyl figure set of the four Monsters was released as a limited “Monsters Figurine Set.” followed by an all black release of the set a few months later. (2, 4, 5)
Exhibition Inclusion – KAWS + Warhol (2024–2025)
The General Mills cereal artworks were elevated to gallery status when they featured in the KAWS + Warhol exhibition at The Andy Warhol Museum (May 2024–Jan 2025). These paintings and installations—depicting KAWS’ cereal box designs and characters—were displayed alongside Warhol’s iconic Brillo Boxes, bridging mass-market branding and high art sensibilities. Why It Matters
This collaboration demonstrates KAWS’ ability to disrupt the everyday — from breakfast tables to museum walls — turning cereal packaging into cultural artifacts. Through AR games, toys, and museum showings, he bridges nostalgia, interactivity, and critical art discourse.
