The KAWS Darth Vader was released in 2007 as part of a highly limited collaboration between KAWS and Lucasfilm, blending one of pop culture’s most iconic villains with the unmistakable form of a KAWS Companion. The figure features Darth Vader’s full armor and cape, complete with molded chest panel and helmet, but with signature KAWS traits like X-ed out eyes and Mickey-gloved hands. The hybrid character doesn’t wield a lightsaber, instead standing with arms by its sides in a stoic pose that feels more reflective than combative. It was produced by Medicom Toy and sold through select outlets, including OriginalFake in Japan.
Only 500 units were made, and the figure retailed for $200 at launch. Due to the combination of two massive fanbases—Star Wars and KAWS collectors—it quickly became one of the most coveted early crossovers in the designer toy scene. The piece has since become a grail for many, with resale prices skyrocketing depending on condition and packaging. Its clean execution and restrained color palette helped cement it as one of the more iconic licensed works in KAWS’s early catalog.
