This collaboration paired KAWS with Brian Schroeder, better known as Pushead, a legendary illustrator known for his work with Metallica and Misfits. The resulting Companion featured an all-over marbled paint treatment that gave each figure a completely unique appearance. No two were alike, with swirling patterns of reds, browns, and muted earth tones layered into the vinyl, creating a raw, almost fossilized effect. It was a bold departure from KAWS’ typically clean, flat color schemes.
Released quietly through OriginalFake and a handful of specialty shops, this figure quickly became a grail for collectors. The crossover between KAWS’ street pop sensibility and Pushead’s underground punk legacy gave the piece cultural weight beyond the toy scene. It was both a sculpture and a collision of subcultures, marking an early moment where KAWS showed just how far his characters could stretch beyond their original context.
