THE TWINS - TODD JAMES - 2006
KAWS collaborated with graffiti artist Todd James in 2006 to release The Twins, a vinyl figure set that combined sharp design with an unexpected take on femininity.
Retail Price: $150
Edition Size: 500 Per Color (Brown / Gray/Pink) and 100 for Glitter Variant
The Twins features two stylized female characters posed side by side, both with exaggerated proportions and minimalist expressions. One figure carries KAWS’s X-eyes and skull-like head, the other reads more human, a tight contrast that makes the pair feel like a single thought split in two. First released in July 2006 and published with Medicom Toy through KAWSONE, the set landed in Pink and Gray, with a later Glitter treatment that added a playful, surreal shimmer.
The two characters were sculpted to complement each other, offering contrast in both form and surface. It marked one of KAWS’s clearest departures from his usual male-centered silhouettes, blending Todd James’s bold cartoon language with KAWS’s graphic clarity. The result still feels fresh, exploring identity and duality within a format that reads instantly on a shelf and in photos.
EDITOR NOTE: Auction Houses seem to toggle between “Gray” and “Brown” variants, but visually they are the same.
