In 2007, KAWS released the first 4ft Companion figures, elevating his vinyl work into the realm of large-format sculpture. Made from fiberglass and standing roughly 4 feet tall, these pieces came in the signature Gray, Black, and Brown colorways, mimicking the paint schemes from the original 2001 vinyl Companions. Unlike the soft vinyl of his toy-sized work, these were rigid, glossy, and monumental, each edition produced in very limited numbers (100 total). They were initially made available through select galleries and directly through KAWS himself, cementing their rarity and desirability early on.
These sculptures marked a key transition in KAWS’ career—from subversive pop object-maker to a fixture in the fine art world. The 4ft Companion wasn’t just a scaled-up toy; it was a declaration of presence. It echoed the same emotional tension of the smaller versions—arms by the sides, head slightly bowed, eyes X’d out—but with an entirely different physical impact when standing in a gallery or collector’s space. The 2007 release laid the groundwork for later large-scale editions like the 5ft, 6ft, and monumental outdoor Companions, while also establishing KAWS’ practice of blurring the line between editioned sculpture and collectible art.
