KAWS’ first 4ft Companion sculptures dropped in 2007, scaling up his beloved character into glossy fiberglass and bringing it into the world of fine art. Released in Gray, Black, and Brown colorways, these pieces held the same slouched posture and quiet despair of their vinyl predecessors, but now demanded attention as physical, gallery-ready sculptures. Their presence was bold, the finish immaculate, and the edition sizes incredibly limited—only 100 per colorway. The 4ft series marked a defining moment in how KAWS straddled the line between pop art and sculpture, pulling street-level design into the world of blue-chip collectors.

In 2009, KAWS pushed the narrative further with the release of the 4ft Flayed Companion, a continuation of his anatomical dissection motif. While the silhouette stayed the same, one side of the figure was split open to reveal exposed bone, muscle, and organs, rendered in vibrant, contrasting detail. Available in Brown, Gray, and Black editions, the Flayed Companion turned the inward vulnerability of the Companion into a literal, physical gesture. The scale made the internal view even more intense, turning the piece into something both clinical and emotional. It solidified KAWS’ ability to communicate feeling through posture, texture, and form—pushing collectible sculpture into more conceptual territory without losing the visual impact fans had come to expect.
