Released in 2016, the Companion Flayed Open Edition brought KAWS’ signature dissected design to a wider audience in 11-inch vinyl form. Available in grey, black, brown, and later blush, each colorway was priced at $200 and produced as an open edition.

Debuting on November 22, 2016, to accompany KAWS’s Where the End Starts exhibition, this Flayed Companion features the classic Companion figure with one half showing exposed organs, muscles, and skull details rendered in vibrant interior colors. The figure retains KAWS’s trademark X-eyes, glove-like hands, and sculpted feet, standing about 11 inches tall. It comes sealed in blister packaging and includes a stamped signature on the underside.
Despite being labeled open edition, the Flayed Companion was produced in four colorways—grey, black, brown, and blush—and sold out rapidly through KAWSONE, MoMA, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, creating scarcity as soon as production ceased. It retailed at $200 and remains one of the most recognizable large-scale open edition works by KAWS. Its combination of accessibility, sculpture quality, and emotional impact has solidified its place as an essential piece in modern art toy collections.
