Passing Through - 2013
Released in 2013, PASSING THROUGH captures the Companion in a rare moment of vulnerability, seated with its head in its hands. Produced in grey, black, and brown, each edition was limited to 500 pieces and retailed at $350.
Retail Price: $280
Edition Size: 500 Each Color
A seated COMPANION with head in hands, Passing Through takes a public sculpture and distills it into a 12-inch vinyl that feels intimate and a little raw. It reads as shyness and self-protection, a quiet moment where the character pulls inward even as the world looks on.
Released in 2013 in brown, grey, and black, the figure was produced by Medicom Toy for OriginalFake and sold through KAWSONE and select retailers. Brown landed first in April, then grey and black followed in May. The retail price at the time was $260, the edition was 500 per color, and the scale sits around 12 × 6 × 7.5 inches. Those specs match contemporaneous drop notes and dealer listings, not the higher MSRP often repeated on resale trackers.
The pose traces back to KAWS’s 2010 Harbour City installation in Hong Kong, a five-meter outdoor COMPANION that helped set the emotional tone for the piece. From there, the sculpture toured to spots like the Aldrich, The Standard in New York, and Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station, which is why this smaller vinyl carries so much presence.
