SKULL KUN - BOUNTY HUNTER - 2006
The KAWS x Bounty Hunter “Skull Kun” is a fierce vinyl mashup of KAWS’s signature X-eyed style and Bounty Hunter’s street-punk mascot, produced in limited runs and now considered a holy grail among early 2000s collectors
Retail Price: $200
Edition Size: 400 of Each Color
“Skull Kun” marked a standout moment in the ongoing collaboration between KAWS and Japanese streetwear powerhouse Bounty Hunter. Released in 2006 and produced by Medicom Toy, this vinyl figure blended Bounty Hunter’s menacing skull-headed mascot with the irreverent, pop-art attitude of KAWS. The result was a sculpturally rich, character-driven piece featuring X’d out eyes, jagged teeth, articulated arms with bone detailing, and a bonus accessory—a removable mini KAWS head held in Skull Kun’s grip. Multiple colorways were produced, including black (exclusive to Bounty Hunter), white (sold at OriginalFake), and rarer variants like glow-in-the-dark, red, brown, and green, each limited to just 400 pieces.
Collectors praise Skull Kun as one of the most dynamic and well-executed vinyl releases of its time. The toy’s hybrid design captures both artists’ aesthetics while standing apart from KAWS’s more subdued Companion figures. Its relatively small production run, plus the added lore of two cult brands joining forces, has kept demand high on the secondary market, where clean versions of the figure routinely sell for thousands of dollars. Skull Kun represents a moment when KAWS was still steeped in the world of underground toy culture, before his global art-world takeover, and is now seen as a key piece for serious collectors tracking the evolution of his work.
